neutron star: When a star explodes
as a supernova it leaves a dense core
of material. If the initial mass of that
core exceeds 1.4 times that of our
Sun, the objectΓÇÖs immense gravity
makes it unstable. To make the
matter more stable, all the electrons
combine with protons to form
neutrons, thus eliminating opposing
electrostatic forces. These neutrons in
turn collapse into an incredibly dense
ball of matter known as a neutron
star. Neutron stars, although only
about 10 to 100 kilometers in
diameter, contain somewhere
between 0.8 and 3 solar masses.
