  1. neutron star: When a star explodes
  2. as a supernova it leaves a dense core
  3. of material. If the initial mass of that
  4. core exceeds 1.4 times that of our
  5. Sun, the objectΓÇÖs immense gravity
  6. makes it unstable. To make the
  7. matter more stable, all the electrons
  8. combine with protons to form
  9. neutrons, thus eliminating opposing
  10. electrostatic forces. These neutrons in
  11. turn collapse into an incredibly dense
  12. ball of matter known as a neutron
  13. star. Neutron stars, although only
  14. about 10 to 100 kilometers in
  15. diameter, contain somewhere
  16. between 0.8 and 3 solar masses.
